About Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville City (Khmer: ក្រុងព្រះសីហនុ, Krŏng Preăh Seihănŭ), also known as Kampong Som (Khmer: កំពង់សោម, Kâmpóng Saôm), is a coastal city in southwestern Cambodia and the capital of Preah Sihanouk Province. Located on a peninsula that juts into the Gulf of Thailand, the city is bordered by a stretch of scenic beaches and coastal wetlands near Ream National Park. The Ou Trojak Jet River, lined with mangroves, flows through the city, and nearby islands—under Sihanoukville’s administration—offer additional natural attractions and moderate development that draws independent travelers and backpackers from across Asia.
Named in honor of former King Norodom Sihanouk, the city had a population of nearly 90,000 as of 2008. It comprises six communes and has grown in tandem with the development of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port—Cambodia’s only deep-sea port, which began construction in 1955. The port has made Sihanoukville a key hub for international trade, logistics, and transport.
Thanks to its beautiful coastline, offshore islands, and tourism infrastructure, Sihanoukville is Cambodia’s leading seaside resort. Since the late 20th century, both local and international tourism have steadily increased. The city’s diversity, natural surroundings, and recreational offerings have also attracted seasonal and permanent foreign residents, making it one of the most multicultural areas in Cambodia.
Despite its appeal, Sihanoukville faces ongoing challenges with infrastructure, especially in water and power supply, and limited healthcare facilities that meet international standards. Urban development has often lagged behind its growing popularity, with much of the architecture remaining unremarkable.
In recent years, large-scale Chinese investment has transformed the city, particularly through the opening of numerous casinos and real estate projects. By 2019, nearly 80,000 Chinese nationals—workers, investors, and developers—resided in the city, making up around 90% of the foreign population. Mandarin signage has become more common than Khmer or English in many areas. Alongside this growth, concerns have risen over crime, corruption, and organized activity, as Sihanoukville becomes a key location in China’s Belt and Road Initiative.
The future of Sihanoukville depends on balancing economic expansion with responsible urban planning and environmental protection to sustain its role as both a trade gateway and a tourist destination.
